The British Baking League: Rules, Privacy and Your Data

Welcome to The British Baking League, an independent prediction game for television baking fans. By creating an account or submitting predictions, you agree to the rules and terms on this page.

The British Baking League is an unofficial, independent fan competition. It is not affiliated with, authorised by, sponsored by or endorsed by Love Productions, Channel 4 or any broadcaster, producer or rights-holder connected with the television programme. All programme names and related trademarks belong to their respective owners.

1. Who can take part

  • Registration is free and open to anyone aged 16 or over.
  • Each person may create only one player account.
  • You must provide a valid email address and choose a suitable public display name.
  • Please do not impersonate another person or use an offensive, discriminatory, misleading or unlawful display name.
  • You are responsible for keeping your login details secure and for activity carried out through your account.
  • Please contact us promptly if you believe somebody else has accessed your account.

2. How the competition works

The competition consists of series predictions and weekly episode predictions.

Series predictions

Before the series prediction deadline (the airing of the second episode), players predict:

  • The series winner
  • The three finalists
  • The total number of Hollywood Handshakes during the series

Series predictions can be edited until the displayed series deadline. After that deadline, they are locked and become read-only.

Weekly predictions

For each available episode, players will predict:

  • Star Baker
  • The baker who will be eliminated
  • First place in the Technical Challenge
  • Last place in the Technical Challenge
  • The answer to a weekly challenge question

Weekly predictions can be edited until the deadline shown for that episode. Once the deadline has passed, predictions are locked and displayed as a read-only summary.

When a baker has been recorded as eliminated, that baker will no longer be available for selection in future episodes. Previous predictions involving that baker remain part of the historical record.

3. Deadlines

  • All deadlines are displayed on the Predictions page in UK local time.
  • Predictions must be submitted and successfully saved before the stated deadline.
  • Starting to complete a form before the deadline does not guarantee that a submission made after the deadline will be accepted.
  • It is each player’s responsibility to check the deadline and confirm that their predictions have been saved.
  • Reminder emails are a courtesy only. Not receiving a reminder does not extend a deadline.
  • Late predictions will not normally be accepted. If a technical problem affects the whole website, the administrator may extend or reopen a deadline fairly for all affected players.

4. Scoring

Weekly prediction points

  • Correct Star Baker: 1 point
  • Correct eliminated baker: 1 point
  • Correct first place in the Technical Challenge: 1 point
  • Correct last place in the Technical Challenge: 1 point
  • Correct weekly challenge answer, where offered: 1 point

Series prediction points

  • Correct series winner: 5 points
  • Each correctly predicted finalist: 3 points, up to a maximum of 9 finalist points
  • Closest prediction for the total number of Hollywood Handshakes: 3 points
  • If two or more players are equally closest on the handshake prediction, each of those players receives 3 points.

A predicted finalist earns points if that baker reaches the final, regardless of which finalist position the player used when submitting their prediction.

5. Leaderboard and ties

The leaderboard total is the sum of a player’s weekly and series points for the current series.

Players with the same total receive the same rank. Where players are tied, names may be displayed alphabetically, but alphabetical order does not break the tie or award a higher finishing position.

Your chosen display name and score may appear on the public homepage top-three panel. The full leaderboard is available to logged-in players. Email addresses are not displayed on either leaderboard.

6. Results and corrections

Scores are based on the results shown or announced in the relevant broadcast. Results and leaderboard updates may contain spoilers.

The administrator will make reasonable efforts to enter results accurately. If a scoring or data-entry error is discovered, it may be corrected and the leaderboard recalculated. The administrator’s reasonable decision on an ambiguous result, deadline issue or interpretation of these rules is final.

7. Fair play and acceptable use

You must not:

  • Create multiple accounts to gain an advantage
  • Submit predictions on behalf of another player without their permission
  • Attempt to bypass a deadline or alter predictions after they have locked
  • Attempt to access another player’s account or private information
  • Use bots, scripts or automated tools to create accounts or submit entries
  • Interfere with the website, its security or its availability
  • Use the website for unlawful, abusive or disruptive activity

Accounts may be suspended or removed where there is reasonable evidence of cheating, abuse, automated registration, a security threat or a serious breach of these rules. Where practical, the player will be told why action has been taken.

8. Availability and changes

We aim to keep the website available and the competition accurate, but uninterrupted or error-free access cannot be guaranteed. We are not responsible for missed entries caused by a player’s device, internet connection, forgotten password or failure to press the save button.

These rules may be updated to clarify the competition, correct errors, respond to legal requirements or support new features. Material changes affecting an active competition will be communicated clearly and will not be applied retrospectively where doing so would be unfair.

Unless expressly announced otherwise, the competition is played for fun and bragging rights only. Scores, rankings and accounts have no cash value and cannot be sold or transferred. Any future prize promotion will have separate eligibility and prize terms.

9. Who is responsible for your information

10. Information we collect

When you use the website, we may collect and use:

  • Your chosen display name
  • Your email address
  • Your WordPress user ID and account registration date
  • Your encrypted or hashed password credentials; passwords are managed by WordPress and are not stored in readable plain text
  • Your series and weekly predictions
  • Your scores, ranking and submission timestamps
  • Records of reminder emails generated for outstanding predictions
  • Information you provide when contacting us
  • Limited technical and security information, such as an IP address, browser information and server logs
  • A temporary one-way identifier derived from an IP address to limit automated or repeated registration attempts

Please do not include sensitive personal information in your display name or in any free-text prediction field.

11. Why we use your information

We use personal information to:

  • Create and secure your player account
  • Allow you to log in, submit and edit predictions
  • Calculate scores and display league rankings
  • Identify players who have or have not submitted predictions
  • Send requested or operational emails, including password resets and prediction reminders
  • Respond to questions, account requests and complaints
  • Prevent bots, cheating, abuse and security incidents
  • Maintain, troubleshoot and improve the website
  • Meet legal obligations and establish or defend legal claims where necessary

Our principal lawful basis is that processing is necessary to provide the league service you request when you register. We also rely on our legitimate interests in operating a fair and secure competition, communicating essential service information and protecting the website. Where the law requires consent for a particular optional feature, we will ask for it separately.

We do not use your account email address for unrelated marketing unless you have separately chosen to receive it.

12. What other people can see

Your display name, score and rank may be visible to other players on the leaderboard. Your display name and score may also appear publicly in the homepage top-three panel.

Your email address, password and individual account-security information are not displayed publicly. After an episode deadline, other players’ predictions are not automatically made public unless the website introduces and clearly explains such a feature in the future.

Choose a display name you are comfortable showing publicly. It does not need to be your full legal name.

13. Who we share information with

We do not sell or rent your personal information.

Information may be processed by trusted service providers that help operate the website, such as:

  • The website and database hosting provider
  • WordPress and necessary website software providers
  • The provider used to deliver account and reminder emails
  • Security, backup or technical-support providers where used

These providers may process information only as needed to deliver their services and subject to their own contractual and legal responsibilities. We may also disclose information where required by law or where reasonably necessary to protect users, the website or legal rights.

If a provider processes information outside the United Kingdom, we will use an appropriate UK data-transfer safeguard where required.

14. Cookies

The website uses essential cookies needed for account login, authentication, security and basic website operation. These cookies remember that you are logged in and help protect your account.

Essential cookies do not require consent where they are strictly necessary to provide a service you requested. If optional analytics, advertising or other non-essential cookies are added later, the cookie notice and consent controls will be updated before those cookies are used.

You can block cookies in your browser, but blocking essential cookies may prevent login and account features from working.

15. How long we keep information

Account information, predictions and scoring history are normally kept while your account remains active and while they are needed to operate the league.

When you permanently delete your account, your WordPress login, weekly predictions, series predictions and leaderboard history are deleted from the live website. Limited copies may remain temporarily in routine security backups until those backups are overwritten. Backup copies are not used for ordinary league activity.

Technical security logs and correspondence may be retained for a limited period where reasonably needed for security, troubleshooting, legal obligations or handling a dispute. Information may be anonymised and retained for statistical purposes where it can no longer identify you.

16. How to delete your account and data

You can delete your account yourself:

  1. Log in and open the My Account page.
  2. Open Delete my account.
  3. Enter your current password.
  4. Type DELETE in capital letters.
  5. Confirm Permanently delete my account.

This permanently removes your player login, weekly predictions, series predictions and leaderboard history. It cannot be undone.

If you cannot access your account, email danniwarren23@gmail.com from the address associated with it and ask for deletion. We may need to verify your identity before acting on the request. An administrator can then remove the account and its league data.

Deleting your account does not automatically erase information that we must retain for a legal obligation or an existing legal claim, although this is expected to be unusual for this service.

17. Your data-protection rights

Depending on the circumstances, UK data-protection law may give you the right to:

  • Ask for a copy of your personal information
  • Ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete information
  • Ask us to delete your information
  • Ask us to restrict how information is used
  • Object to processing based on legitimate interests
  • Receive certain information in a portable format
  • Withdraw consent where processing relies on consent
  • Complain about how your information has been handled

To exercise a right, contact danniwarren23@gmail.com. We may ask for enough information to confirm your identity. We will normally respond within one month, although the law allows extra time for particularly complex requests.

If you are unhappy with our response, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint. We would appreciate the opportunity to resolve your concern first.

18. Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect account information. These include WordPress password hashing, authenticated sessions, security checks on account actions, limited registration attempts and restricted administrator controls.

No website or internet transmission can be guaranteed completely secure. You should use a unique password, keep it confidential and contact us if you suspect unauthorised access.

19. Links to other websites

The website may link to broadcasters, programme information or other external websites. Those websites operate under their own privacy notices and terms. We are not responsible for their content or handling of personal information.
